Types of fostering

Offers temporary care for children whose families are dealing with issues that prevent them from providing proper care. These placements can last from a few days to several months.

Involves caring for children and young people who cannot return to their birth families. The aim is that they remain with you until they can live independently.

A one-off or regular breaks for children or young people who are usually living with another foster carer. Requires availability for at least one weekend per month and during school holidays.

Regular, short breaks for children and young people with disabilities to give their families a break, either during the day or overnight.

Provides immediate, short-term care for children who need a safe place to stay on very short notice, often due to crises or emergencies. Emergency foster carers need to be available full-time for this scheme, which works to a model of two weeks on and two weeks off where possible. A retainer is paid for the weeks without a young person staying.

Involves caring for children with specific needs, such as those with disabilities, medical conditions, or behavioural issues, requiring foster carers with particular skills and experience.

Supports young parents (usually mothers but could be both parents) and their babies, helping the parent develop the skills and confidence to care for their child independently. Requires experienced foster carers.
